Are any of your vendors looking to give their home a revamp in the new year? As 2019 draws to a close, it’s time to take a sneak peek at six up-and-coming trends in home décor for 2020.
Warmer colours
Tired of all those shades of grey? Some designers say grey-on-grey and all-white looks are going out of style, to be replaced by warmer neutrals, beige and a lot of green.
“[Compared to harsh greys and whites, green] is a softer, more comfortable palette to live with,” Wellington interior designer Debra DeLorenzo told Stuff.co.nz this year. “In nature, green works with every other colour. Reds are still popular in New Zealand homes and soft greens are a complementary colour to this.”
But grey itself isn’t on the way out just yet; it is set to become more of an accent, with grey furniture starting to make appearances. “A steadfast trend, the colour grey remains a strong choice for decorating the home. It looks stylish in every room and isn’t just limited to grey wallpaper or wall paint,” says Wallsauce.com.
Playful decorating
When it comes to both colours and textures, some interior designers agree that playful decorating will take centre stage in 2020.
According to Wallsauce.com, patterns (3D patterns, in particular) will be taking home décor to another dimension: “As seen at Milan Design Week 2020, patterns are key and everything’s getting multi-dimensional. If you don’t fear optical illusion-induced headaches and have enough open-plan space to experiment with, adding 3D style prints and bold geos can be a great way to update your home interiors.”
Bathrooms with a punch
Archipro.co.nz says texture, colour, connectivity and personalisation are key features in the future of bathroom design.
“Spaces can be more than functional, and bathrooms are increasingly becoming a living space where textures and materials can create a more harmonious atmosphere – one that has a positive impact on us at an emotional level,” explains Andrea Barzotto, commercial/marketing manager at Metrix Bathrooms.
With designers and architects exploring new shapes and textures, the boring bathroom décor of the past seems to have its days numbered. “We are seeing an increasing interest across the spectrum from gloss to satin surfaces, the shape of the bathroom vessel and counter, and freedom in tapware colour and style of mounting,” says Barzotto.
Natural textures
According to experts, including Homeandinteriors.nz, nature-inspired textures will make a comeback in fabrics and wallpapers, alongside timeless wood grain: “Whether it’s warm oak tones mixed with earthy greens and teal blues, or a rustic beige natural setting, cabinets, benchtops, furniture and even statement doors are trending with this texture and are a great idea to look at for future home renovations.”
The latest in houseplants
Indoor gardens have been on trend lately, and are expected to be even more prominent in 2020. Besides the omnipresent monstera, Homestolove.co.nz says five houseplants will be at the forefront of home decorating:
· Banana trees – to turn your vendors’ home into a tropical paradise
· Olive trees – while typically an outdoor plant, there are increasingly popular for indoors
· Cast iron plant – a popular choice inside and out
· Long-leaf fig – for a graceful and elegant look
· Cacti and succulents – no green thumb needed.
Sustainability
As the environment receives more and more attention in the public debate, and demand for sustainable features increases, home design companies are embracing the trend with things like living walls and solar power.
If your vendors are considering renovating or building new, as Homeandinteriors.nz points out, “it’s the perfect opportunity to jump on this trend (that we hope is here to stay) and make design choices that will reduce your family’s [or the buyer’s] carbon footprint in the long run.”
